Field Notes
Nowadays everyone has a blackberry, iPhone, iPad, etc to write their ideas and to-do lists in...I do it too. But to me there's nothing like a hand written to-do list. Checking off or running a line thru each task as things get done (makes me feel good and ish). If we ever bump into each other, there's a good chance I have a notebook, post-it note, or something on me.
I love...LOVE these here notebooks from J Crew. At $10 for a pack of 3, you can't go wrong.
"Inspired by the vanishing subgenre of Midwestern design, old-fashioned pocket ledgers and the charming appeal of a well-edited to-do list, Field Notes are a refreshing break from high-tech handheld PDAs. Perfectly sized to pop in a back pocket, they're great for jotting down observations, reminders and inspirations of all kinds. Each soft-covered book comes with 48 pages of high-quality lined paper (read: no feathering or bleeding) and the back cover boasts a handy ruler and a list of "Practical Applications" for the notebook's use (Shady Transactions, Gambling Debts, Hymns/Prayers and Last Will and Testament, just to name a few)". - J Crew

Speed Racers
Before fixed-gear bikes became de rigueur for urban aesthetes, they were the weapon of choice for Japan’s fearless Keirin cyclists. A gladiatorial incarnation of track cycling that dates back to 1948, the Japanese sporting phenomenon operates by an intricate set of rules that sees competitors jostling for position on steeply banked tracks at lightning fast speeds, all but encouraging spectacular crashes. In today's film for NOWNESS, Jonathan de Villiers (whose fashion photography and portraiture has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Wallpaper* and Fantastic Man) traveled to the national Keirin school in Tokyo and the Tachikawa and Yokkaichi velodromes to decode the strategy that governs the racing phenomenon. “I knew next to nothing about it when I went,” says de Villiers, “but I'm a big admirer of the anthropological documentary where you get taken into a whole different world. And what a strange, special and complex universe it turned out to be.” The state-run industry amasses tens of billions of dollars in gambling revenue each year.

Kevin Lyons x Colette x Chanel
A few days ago Chanel opened up a Pop-Up shop at Colette. On display were an assortment of classic Chanel products, such as quilted bags, leather gloves and various apparel. Artist Kevin Lyons, who recent held an exhibition at the shop, was on hand customizing bags and adding Chanel influenced imagery to the space. If I drew all over my moms bags it would be the end of me! Kevin Lyons does it and its cool. Haha

Waste Land Movie
This here is amazing! Brooklyn artist Vik Muniz travels to the world's greatest landfill near Rio De Janeiro to photograph portraits of its workers and transform trash into art! This goes to show you that beauty can be found everywhere, you just gotta look for it.
SYNOPSIS
Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT, COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) has great access to the entire process and, in the end, offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

Reverting to Type Exhibition
The lost art of letterpress. Damn I wish I could attend this exhibit. I love the fact that people are still doing things by hand and not via a program. Much respect to those Wordsmiths!
Curated by Graham Bignell & Richard Ardagh, Reverting to Type features the efforts and work of 20 modern day letterpress practitioners from around the world. There’s no need to detail the demise of print, yet exhibitions like Reverting to Type continue the legacy and beauty of printed materials. The exhibition will conclude on January 22, 2011.
